Pantheon

A note on the deities of Rift - most deities are neutral and welcome followers of any alignment. Certain deities have alignments other than neutral and do not accept followers of certain alignments; check the “Supports:” section to see if your alignment works with a given deity. I’m still in the process of building the pantheon, so if you want to play a character with a deity with certain domains in their portfolio and none of the deities listed below fit, please let me know and I’ll come up with another deity that works for you.

The existence of the twelve deities and the Divine Spark is widely accepted by those familiar with the various divine myths and legends that are told and retold throughout the nations of Rift. Although officially the Church of Ithyndus and by extension the Crown deny the existence of any deity besides Ithyndus, most people within Karathos still believe that the other eleven are deities of one form or another. Although some people fully accept the Church’s brand of monotheism, most of the rest tend to fall in or near one of two camps. Some believe that the Twelve were created by the Divine Spark and were subsequently granted dominion over Rift, although thoughts about how this may have happened and how the Twelve have interacted with each other ever since they came into existence differ substantially. Others believe that the twelve all hold some sort of divine power but that Ithyndus is the true great divine power and that the other eleven, while divine, are subservient to Ithyndus (this is known as Lemuel’s Heresy after Lemuel the Blasphemer, previously known as Lemuel Krupps, who published a number of writings and delivered several sermons to this effect in the early 1300s before being excommunicated, tortured, and executed for heresy in SD 1322. This philosophy is similar in many regards to the Church’s official doctrine regarding the Twelve and the Divine Spark.) This camp also tends to think that the Divine Spark is simply a metaphor for the divine power wielded by the Twelve. There are many who do not fit in either camp; some of these don’t give much or any thought to the divine at all and among the others one can find just about any sort of belief system that you can imagine.

Thoughts and theologies differ substantially among the elder races and throughout the other kingdoms of Rift. It is widely accepted (except by the majority of humans of Karathos) that the twelve exist as deities but that the Divine Spark is separate from and greater than all of them. The existence of the sentient races is widely attributed to the gods. Many believe that each race was brought into being by a specific deity - Oglan for the dwarves, Cyara for the elves, Thephin for the gnomes, Ugaris for the halflings, Gigarin for the humans, and Uzor for the orcs. Apart from the humans of Karathos, most members of each race tend to worship their supposed creator deity over others. Even in Karathos, the further one moves from the larger population centers, one may encounter a greater and greater diversity of religious practices.
